The large dial is porcelain enamel on copper with beautifully cut gilt hands. It is signed by the retailer Martinot à Paris. Martinot is an illustrious clockmaking name from the 17th and 18th centuries however by this age we think it was a trading name of Chartier & Marcus. The firm of Chariter and Marcus is listed in Tardy, Dictionnaire des Horlogers. The French movement is by Chartier & Marcus and is of high quality. It is in excellent clean and running condition. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running. Condition of the case is excellent, The lacquer is in very good condition, there are a few very minor losses, mostly to the top of the bracket. The finish of the lacquer is very good, bright and clean with a lovely antique crackelure. The Ormolu is bright and clean with no losses. Dial is also excellent with no chips or scratches.
Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employ two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free. |
