Japy Freres Large Gilt Brass Clock ~ French - Circa 1870 ~ ~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~ A lovely, top quality original antique French clock from the famous maker Japy Freres. It is classical Louis XVI in style, architectural in shape with the movement mounted above an elaborate panel flanked by columns. The domed top is surmounted by a large urn with trailing foliage. The whole case is profusely decorated with floral foliage and acanthus and sits on acanthus bracket feet. It is a heavy clock, beautifully modelled and finished with a good original gild.
The dial is also gilt brass with 12 individual enamel cartouches and original blued steel hands. The bezel is fitted with convex, bevelled glass. The rear door is also glazed to allow the movement to be seen. The French movement is by Japy Freres and has the makers 'Grande Medaille D'Honneur' on the backplate. It is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running! Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The dial is also in excellent condition just an occasional tiny nibble to the cartouches.
