English Antique Tall case Clock - Rolling Moon. Circa 1850 ~ Clockmaker - Mary Agar, Bury ~ ~~ Excellent Condition ~~ A stunning Mahogany longcase or tall case clock, rich flame red mahogany cross banded and inlaid with rosewood. The shape is typical of the period with swan neck pediment and arch dial, short door with turned pillars to the sides and a wide plinth sitting on cabriole feet. It features a moon phase dial to the arch to indicate the 29 1/2 day lunar cycle. This is fully functioning, as is the date subsidiary dial in the centre. The spandrels of the dial are painted with scenes of the progression of life; starting with a boy with a lamb, to courtship and marriage, middle age and finally old age in the bottom right hand corner. Mary Agar is listed as working in Bury between 1848 and 1858. She was the widow of Thomas Agar, Clockmaker, and continued the business with her sons. ref watchmakers and clockmakers of the world, Brian Loomes. The clock runs for 8 days and strikes hourly on a bell. The movement is in excellent clean and fully running condition having been cleaned and serviced by our clockmaker. it is complete with original pendulum, bell and weights. The moon, seconds and calendar subsidiary dials are also fully functioning. The case is in excellent condition, we have carefully cleaned and polished the case and it has a lovely colour and clean finish. We have replaced the hood door glass and fitted a new lock to the trunk door. We have replaced some minor veneer losses and coloured them to match the original, there are some old replacements of veneer, particularly to the hood door. The cabriole feet have been replaced and stained to match the original timber. As with any antique furniture, there are some old knocks and scrapes which only add to the character; particularly to the right hand side of the hood there is a an old scrape which is photographed below. The clock is totally correct, seat board, cheek boards, movement and dial are all original to each other and the case. The dial has been carefully and sympathetically restored by our dial restorer who has preserved the original craquelure of the enamel, in fact it is difficult to tell it has been restored. The calendar, hour and minute hands are original - we have cut a new seconds hand to match. The clock is in stunning condition as you can
see in the pictures below. A lovely clock in excellent
condition, ready to grace your home!
