Huge Antique Clock Set ~ Ormolu and Specimen Marble Four Glass Crystal Regulator~ French - Circa 1890 ~ ~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~ A very large and truly magnificent original antique French four glass crystal regulator clock set. It is made of the most beautiful variegated specimen marble, with salmon pink and silver grey veining, mounted with finely finished ormolu (gilded brass/bronze). It is classical in style, to the top is a large and flamboyant figure of an eagle, and to each side a beautifully depicted Greek Sphinx, all beautifully modelled and chased. The movement is mounted within the four glass case, allowing both the movement and the mercury compensated pendulum to be seen working.
The side urns are equally large and well finished, a large specimen marble 'cup' is held aloft on three elegantly designed legs of ormolu with hairy paw feet and eagle capitals. The dial is cream enamel on copper with delicately painted floral swags between the numerals and finely fretted gilt brass hands. The French movement is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. The mercury compensated pendulum is original, there is a slight discolouration to one mercury tube. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running!
Condition of the case is
excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any
wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The dial is also in excellent
condition with no damage, just some very slight original marks in the enamel.
The marble is also excellent, there are some small nibbles to the edges and some
chipping to the corners, but nothing that detracts. This set makes a stunning
display as you can see below. Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employ two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free. |
