Japy Freres Large Gothic Clock Set

A large and stunning gilt brass antique French clock set in excellent condition. Style is French Gothic, clock case has an arched top surmounted by and ornate bell. To each side are mythical sea creatures, the sea being formed by stylised waves in the form of bold, pieced 's' shaped scrolls. Beneath the dial there is a goddess mask.

Candelabra have conforming bases with sea creatures mounted to the shoulders above which are urns formed from upturned bells of the same design as the clock. Candelabra arms are modelled as ornate gothic brackets decorated with foliage and mythical creatures. Detailing of the set is fine and well finished and the original gilding is in very good, clean and bright condition. 

The Dial is cream enamel on copper and is complete with the original blued steel hands.

The French movement is by the well known maker Japy Freres and has the Medaille d'honneur mark of 1888. It is of this maker's usual high quality, runs for 8 days on one wind and strikes the halves and the hours on a bell. It has been fully overhauled by our clock maker who has replaced the missing pendulum. Condition of the case is excellent with good original gilding which is bright and clean with just very minor wear or tarnish. The arms of the candelabra are very slightly distorted. The dial is also in good condition with no chips or scratches.
