Large and Stunning Antique French Gilt Brass Clock Set by A. D. Mougin ~ French - Circa 1890 ~ ~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~ A substantial and very finely detailed original antique French gilt brass clock set. It is gothic in design with mythical creatures, lions masks and elaborate, flowing, scrolling foliage. The original gilding is very good and we have cleaned it to a stunning clean and bright condition.
The clock sits on hairy paw feet with a base of stylised waves Mythical sea creatures rise from each side of the clock as to carry it across the ocean. To the front of the clock is a coat of arms motif featuring lions rampant against an unfurled banner. The front panel of the clock is blind fretted with an intricate design with two columns to the sides supporting the broken arch, beneath which sits the large enamel dial. It has a cream background with red crown half-hour markers, large blued steel hands and convex glass. To the top of the clock is a large urn. Candelabra are similar in style with pieced ovoid urns with handles formed as mythical creatures. The French movement is of high quality and has the A.D. Mougin mark on the movement backplate. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully serviced by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running! Condition of the case is excellent with clean and bright finish and there are no losses. There are some occasional light marks to the gilding in places and some very slight discolouration. The dial is also in very good condition with just a couple of small hairlines and some slight nibbles near the winding holes. Candelabra are slightly distorted. This is a stunning clock set that displays just as good as it does in the pictures below!
Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employee two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free. |
