Magnificent Antique French Brass
Drum Head Clock ~ French - Circa 1880 ~ ~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~ A very large, imposing and heavy, beautifully made drum head clock in the classical style of Louis XVI. The movement is mounted in a large drum with super lions mask handles and a large urn to the top. It stands on an elaborate and heavily modelled base with laurel leaves and swags, large scrolls and sturdy, reeded corner columns. The clock is modelled in the round and the rear door is glazed to allow the movement to be seen allowing the clock to be displayed beautifully in the centre of a room. This is a clock of grand proportions for a large room and will require a substantial table or mantle to stand on.
The dial is also gilt brass with 12 individual enamel cartouches and original blued steel hands. The French movement is of high quality and has the Samuel Marti mark on the movement backplate. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a original although one of the half brass shells is missing, this does not effect the running of the clock. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a large, sonorous bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running! Condition of the case is excellent, beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The dial is also in excellent condition with no chips or scratches. There is a small chip to the edge of the original glass of the rear door, only noticeable on close inspection.
Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employ two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free. |
