Japy Freres Sevres Porcelain and Ormolu Boudoir Clock - Cupid and Love ~ French - Circa 1855 ~ ~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~ A beautiful original and early antique French boudoir clock by Japy Freres. It is made of Ormolu (fine gilded brass / bronze). It features stunning blue ground Sevres style porcelain plaques, delicately decorated with floral swags. To the top is a stunning figure of cupid with his bow, and a quiver of arrows at his feet. Below the dial is a pair of love birds.
The clock is decorated 'in the round' so would display very well in the centre of a room. The back door is glazed to allow the movement to be seen. The dial is enamel on copper with blue hour lettering and a separate black minute ring. It has its original finely fretted gilt brass hands and a convex glass bezel. The Japy Freres French movement has the makers 'Grande Medaille D'Honneur' mark on the movement backplate. It is of high quality and is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running! Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with some wear and slight discolouration, the back feet are old replacements. The dial has a repaired chip near the one o'clock but otherwise is very good. The porcelain is in good condition, there is some loss to the over-glaze gilt decoration and a couple of small losses to the blue ground. A stunning ormolu clock to add to your collection. Japy Freres mark on the movement backplate. Retailers mark on the movement backplate. Complete with pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employee two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free. |
