Huge and Magnificent Gilt Brass Cartel Wall Clock ~ Dragons~ French - Circa 1880 ~ ~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~ A Stunning and rare Gothic wall clock, of architectural proportions at over 3 ft in height, standing 10 1/2" from the wall and constructed very heavily from solid gilded brass. The clock is mounted in a large lantern, decorated with tracery and surmounted by a large medieval styled bell about to be struck by two figures with hammers. The lantern appears to float from the wall, suspended by two flying dragons grasping it at each side and a slender bracket from beneath also with a flying dragon. Each dragon is attached to the huge wall bracket by their slender, curving tails. The bracket itself is of typical gothic design with tracery and fleur de lis. This is a grand clock on a huge scale, it is difficult to sense the scale and weight of this clock from the pictures, it will require a substantial bolt, screw or hook to hang from!
The large dial is also gilt brass with 12 individual enamel cartouches and is complete with it's original blued steel hands and convex glass. The French movement is of high quality and is by the famous maker Samuel Marti. It is the best quality Pendule de Paris movement with large square plates and pin-pallet escapement. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original and carries the retailers mark to match the movement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a large sonorous bell. Click the video clip below to hear the bell and watch the clock running! Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with hardly any wear or discolouration and there are no losses. The dial is also in excellent condition just some chipping next to the winding holes. This is a rare and stunning clock to add to your collection.
Complete with original pendulum, bell and a suitable key. Full setting up instructions supplied if required.
About us - All of our clocks are original antiques, we source most of our clocks in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and the UK. We prefer to buy our clocks in original 'dirty' condition. We then clean the cases using a technique we have developed over many years. We employ two qualified clockmakers who overhaul the movements. Movements are thoroughly tested until we are satisfied that they will run trouble free. |
